Leave space for the reply.

If you do not understand the answer, show “Please speak slowly” or “Could you say that again?” GoLocal can also listen to a short Vietnamese reply and return an English translation when you are online and signed in.

For an address, show the exact written address or a Google Maps place link alongside your phrase. The optional stay-details feature keeps your own accommodation information in your browser; you do not need to fill it in to use the phrasebook.

A few useful answers

Before you get started

What are useful Vietnamese phrases for travel?

Begin with “Xin chào” for hello, “Cảm ơn” for thank you, and a request such as “Xin nói chậm một chút” for speaking slowly. This guide groups prepared phrases by greetings, transport, food, shopping, and your stay.

Do I need to pronounce Vietnamese to use these phrases?

You can show the Vietnamese text on your phone. Vietnamese uses tone marks, so keep the written accents intact. GoLocal also offers online speech playback with an AI-generated voice when you are signed in.

Can I change a phrase for my own situation?

Yes. Use “Say something” in GoLocal to write your own English request and translate it into Vietnamese. The English-to-Vietnamese guide also has a form for starting a draft.
